We Don’t Have to Live Like This

Following the recent shooting on the Brown University campus, in which two students were killed and nine injured, police released clips of surveillance footage showing the suspected gunman. This footage shows a short stocky person, most likely a man, of medium complexion, dressed all in black and wearing a surgical mask and beanie hat, presumably to mask his identity. Not much to go on.

However, this person also had a quite distinctive gait, and anyone who knew the shooter would probably recognize it, and him, in the video.

At least one person came forward, which allowed police to home in on a suspect, who happened to be a student at Brown. And a Palestinian refugee. Gait analysis showed a 97 percent plus match.

Following this development, before it even hit the news, somebody removed all traces of this student, Mustafa Karbouch by name, from Brown’s official website. And there were lots of them as he was kind of a minor celebrity because of the Palestine refugee angle, which to Leftists confers instant status, if not actual sainthood.

I am struggling to come up with an innocent reason to explain why Brown might have taken this extraordinary step, which certainly feels like an attempt to help Karbouch escape. But I just can’t.

At least two students reported that the shooter shouted “Allahu Akbar” before opening fire. But when pressed for confirmation, official spokespersons demurred, and instead proclaimed that the declaration was not clearly audible, so disregard that.

Officially, no motive has been established for this attack. But the professor in charge of the study group that was attacked is Jewish, a fellow in the Brown Judaic College, and taught in Jerusalem for four years. And one of the dead students, shot multiple times, was the Vice Chair of the Brown University Republicans. Plus the guy doing the shooting said the thing. So do the math.

Speaking of Allahu Akbar, the Brown University shooting was closely followed by the Bondi beach shooting in Australia. In that incident, father-and-son Pakistani Muslim radicals with multiple long guns targeted Jewish attendees at a Hannukah celebration. As of this writing, fifteen have died and nearly fifty are in hospital. A number linger in critical condition, so the death toll may yet climb. In the wake of the massacre, officials have tripped over themselves downplaying the Muslim angle, while deflecting criticism of the sloppy and amateurish (but diverse!) police response. Some witnesses reported that the rampage went on for thirty minutes. Eventually, both attackers were shot by police. The son was killed, but the father survived with serious wounds. Angry bystanders had to be forcibly restrained by police from pummeling the pair.

Before police were even able to lift a finger, at least twice the gunmen were stopped by bystanders, each of whom was shot for their trouble. One survived but with major wounds, but another man was killed, along with his wife, after intervening.

In the last thirty years, Australia has transformed its once-homogeneous population with an aggressive immigration program. For god knows what reason, large numbers have been intentionally imported from the likes of Syria, Jordan, Pakistan, Yemen, and Iran, places known for their heavy concentrations of extremists. The downstream effects have been considerable. Since the events of October 7, tens of thousands of migrants, along with their sons and daughters have regularly taken over large areas of major cities, blocking all traffic and bringing business to a standstill. To the sound of banging drums, they loudly demand death to Israel. “From the River to the Sea!” Some also call for Sharia law. They do not ask nicely.

Rather than address the elephant in the room, officials offered a clueless, tone-deaf response that left millions of grieving Aussies shaking their heads. Predictably, Prime minister Anthony Albanese vowed to make Australia’s gun laws, already among the strictest in the world, even moreso, and reiterated that the real threat was, as always, “right wing extremism.” Commentators quickly poked holes in this overused trope, as twelve of sixteen mass shootings carried out since 1986 were committed by Islamic extremists, while only one could be credibly tied to “right-wing” anything.

By drips and drabs, the West is coming to the hard realization that it is under attack, by an enemy who hates it and wishes it dead, literally. In the face of this existential threat our leaders flail and vacillate. They quibble, make excuses, beg forgiveness for past imagined crimes, and open the door even wider to let more of the enemy in.

Our enemies take ruthless advantage of our kindness and generosity, which they mock as weakness. They exploit our open system and our high-trust ways. They play us like fiddles, pressing the racism and Islamophobia buttons the instant anyone dares to notice the pattern. We are easy marks, they have found. It’s almost as though they want to be conquered. Allah be praised!

They play the long game, biding their time. For them it’s a holy war. They are commanded by Allah, an old-school, bloodthirsty deity, to advance always, and win at all costs. Infidels are to be conquered, full stop. Those who do not submit must be destroyed. No exceptions.

Where we see a pluralistic, democratic society based on traditional liberal Western values, they see a Caliphate just waiting to be founded on its ashes. There is no middle ground. Islam does not want to coexist; it’s not in its DNA. The Prophet says “Conquer, or else,” so that is what it does. Object lessons are everywhere. Sixty years ago, Lebanon was 70 or 80 percent Christian of various flavors, and five-ish percent Jews, and the remainder Muslim and “other.” It was a prosperous, tolerant place, known for good reason as the “Switzerland of the Middle East.” Now it is wasteland, wrecked by decades of civil war, and 100 percent Muslim.

Before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, Iran was prosperous, modern, and secular place, run by a reform-minded leader. Literacy was nearly universal and women’s rights were a conspicuous centerpiece of national policy. But a stubborn, fanatical fundamentalist Islamic minority found all this modernity offensive, and intentionally provoked Shah Reza Pahlavi into murderous overreaction, which ignited a popular rebellion. In the face of intractable opposition, the Shah abdicated and fled, and was replaced by the Ayatollah Khomeini, a glowering medieval scold who immediately turned the clock back 700 years and left it there. Iran is now one of the most repressive places on the planet. And as if that weren’t enough, it seeks to spread the love, sowing mayhem when and where it can, seeding terror operations across the globe. If the Imams who run Iran and the fanatics who do their bidding could push a button and make the West vanish in a bloody pink mist, they would do it in a millisecond. Failing that, they’ll settle for total subjugation.

If we don’t take care, this could be the fate of the West. Here in the US there is still time to reverse the tide without wanton brutality. Not so in Europe and Australia, which have most likely passed a tipping point.

We don’t have to accept this fate. But if we are to avert it, a decision must be made.

What’s it going to be gents?
